CHARLES HOBBS: TRAPPED IN ORBIT
Opening Reception
Friday, January 11 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Philadelphia artist and intrepid tinkerer, Charles Hobbs, elaborates on his longstanding interests in natural phenomena, weather, landscapes, and low-tech gadgetry with an installation of two, three and four dimensional new works. One can image that Hobbs’ studio is filled with Tesla coils, Jacob’s ladders, perpetual motion machines and other fantastical (and maybe fictional) technologies. The artist’s practice- of invention, trial and error, organic construction- relates to the practice of bricoleur (or modern day hacker)-someone who engages existing materials in creative, resourceful ways. Playful and exploratory, Hobbs’ work is a fitting metaphor for the emergent trend that intersects art, science, and technology through the original use of materials and ubiquitous “do-it-yourself” ethos.

GIVEN ENOUGH EYEBALLS
Opening Reception
Friday, March 14 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Open systems are computer systems that provide some combination of interoperability, portability, and open software standards. It can also mean systems configured to allow unrestricted access by people and/or other computers. The term "open system" has become a buzz word associated with alternative means of interfacing with the digital world. For example, the website Wikipedia allows any user to edit and add to entries at a click of a button, in comparison to a standard encyclopedia that has been written by select people and is not meant to be changed. The exhibition takes its name from a quote by Eric S. Raymond, prominent voice in the open source movment, who said in The Cathedral and the Bazaar that “Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow." Given Enough Eyeballs examines the pluses and minuses of becoming a part of the collective brain and features artists who have a history of using "open systems" or examining the ideas behind them. Curated by Annette Monnier.
